The responsible party, identified as 50-year-old Donyell Horton from Kansas City, Kansas, now faces charges of driving while intoxicated (DWI) and possession of a controlled substance.
The events leading up to the fatal crash occurred at Interstate 70 and Manchester Trafficway just after 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 1. Kansas City police officers responded to the scene, where a Chevrolet Equinox driven by Horton was speeding down I-70 and collided with a Toyota Camry, Ford Expedition, and Ford F-150, all of which were travelling eastbound on the highway.
The impact of the crash caused the Ford Expedition to roll over the Toyota Camry and down an embankment. Tragically, the driver of the Camry, identified as Troy Chatman, was ejected from the vehicle as he was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger of the Ford F-150 escaped uninjured from the collision.
Horton, the driver of the Chevrolet Equinox, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. He is currently in police custody on a $50,000 bond, with a bond hearing scheduled for June 10 at 1:30 p.m.
