A father in Baraboo, Wisconsin is facing a misdemeanor charge after allegedly pushing the superintendent away before he could shake his daughter’s hand at her high school graduation ceremony.
The incident occurred at Baraboo High School on May 31, where video footage captured the father, identified as Matthew Eddy, rushing onto the stage and pushing Superintendent Rainey Briggs.
As his daughter’s name was announced and she began to cross the stage, Eddy intervened, leading to a confrontation with Briggs. Audio recordings captured Eddy expressing his refusal to allow Briggs to shake his daughter’s hand.
The altercation resulted in a misdemeanor charge being filed against Eddy. According to the criminal complaint, Eddy vehemently expressed that he did not want Briggs to touch his child.
Briggs stated to investigators that he felt a sense of fear for his safety during the incident and was concerned that others might come after him following the altercation.
Eddy defended his actions by claiming that he pushed the superintendent away because he believed Briggs had treated his daughter unfairly in a previous disciplinary matter at school.
The confrontation has sparked accusations of racism, with some individuals pointing out the racial dynamics between the Black superintendent and the white father. Representative Francesca Hong from Madison denounced the incident as “gross & racist conduct” in a social media post.
