BARABOO, Wis. (WISN) – A father in Baraboo, Wisconsin, is currently facing a misdemeanor charge after allegedly pushing the superintendent away before he could shake his daughter’s hand at a high school graduation ceremony.
The incident occurred during the graduation ceremony at Baraboo High School on May 31. Video footage of the event captured the moment when the daughter, whose name was being announced, was about to receive her diploma on stage. Suddenly, her father, identified as Matthew Eddy, rushed towards the stage and forcefully pushed Superintendent Rainey Briggs.
An audio recording of the altercation captured the exchange of words between Eddy and Briggs, with Eddy expressing his objection to Briggs shaking his daughter’s hand.
The disruptive incident led to a misdemeanor charge being filed against Eddy. According to the criminal complaint, Eddy vehemently stated to Briggs that he “was not going to touch his child.”
In his statement to investigators, Briggs admitted that he felt threatened and feared for his safety during the altercation, expressing concerns that someone else might come after him for the remainder of the graduation ceremony.
Eddy justified his actions by claiming that he pushed the superintendent away from his daughter because he believed Briggs had treated her unfairly in a previous school-related incident.
The incident has sparked controversy, with some individuals labelling Eddy’s behaviour as racist due to the racial difference between Briggs, who is Black, and Eddy, who is white. Representative Francesca Hong from Madison condemned the incident in a social media post, stating that “No one should have to endure this type of gross & racist conduct.”
Despite the accusations of racism, the school district has refrained from commenting on the matter directly. However, in an official statement, the district assured that it is taking the incident seriously and is cooperating with local law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation.
