WA high school student shot and killed, suspect still at large

School has been canceled at Garfield High School in Seattle following the tragic shooting of a 17-year-old student. Seattle Police have reported that the victim, identified as Amarr Murphy-Paine, was attempting to intervene in a fight between the suspect and another teenager when the fatal shooting took place.

SEATTLE – The 17-year-old student who was fatally shot in the parking lot of Seattle’s Garfield High School on Thursday has been identified as Amarr Murphy-Paine.

A memorial with flowers and signs now rests at the steps near the school where the tragic incident occurred. Several individuals were observed offering prayers at the scene on Friday morning.

The tragic incident unfolded during lunchtime on Thursday when Murphy-Paine reportedly attempted to intervene in an altercation between the suspected shooter and another individual.

Deputy Chief Eric Barden stated that after trying to diffuse the situation, Murphy-Paine walked away, only to be pursued and shot multiple times by the suspect.

Following the shooting, which occurred around 12:45 p.m., law enforcement responded to the scene and found the student with severe injuries. He was swiftly transported to Harborview Medical Center, where he underwent surgery but sadly succumbed to his wounds.

In the aftermath of the violence, Garfield High School was placed on lockdown, and neighbouring schools implemented shelter-in-place protocols as a precautionary measure. Classes have been canceled for Friday and Monday, with normal operations set to resume on Tuesday, June 11.

The suspect, described as a male of high school age, fled the scene and is currently evading authorities. It remains unclear whether the suspect is a student at the school.

This incident marks the second instance of gun violence connected to the school this year; a student was shot in the leg outside Garfield High while waiting at a bus stop in March.

In response to the shooting, Mayor Bruce Harrell emphasized the profound impact of such events on young individuals, stating at a press briefing, “I can’t stress enough the trauma our children are experiencing. Our youth deserve better.”

Sue Rahr, the interim police chief, reassured the community that the Seattle Police Department is committed to intensifying its efforts to ensure the safety of students and local residents in the vicinity.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward as they continue to search for the suspect.
