CASPER — An individual was fatally shot by Casper police on Thursday evening after allegedly attempting to seize control of an officer’s firearm during an arrest, according to the Casper Police Department.
The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. when officers responded to a disturbance call in the 5000 block of Pay It Forward Drive, the department disclosed.
Following the initial contact, law enforcement officials tried to apprehend the individual. However, the suspect reportedly made an effort to wrestle the officer’s firearm away, prompting the officer to open fire.
Immediately after the shooting, officers administered first aid to the suspect before he was transported to Banner Wyoming Medical Center. Tragically, the individual was later pronounced dead.
Efforts to reach the Casper Police Department for comment were unsuccessful as of Friday morning.
No officers sustained injuries during the incident, and authorities have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat in the area. Traffic and access to nearby private residences have not been affected.
As per standard procedure for officer-involved shootings, the investigation has been handed over to the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation.
While a Casper DCI officer redirected inquiries to an office commander who was unavailable, the department announced that the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave.
“The investigation is still in its early stages,” the news release indicated.
