JOLIET, Ill. (CBS) — A 23-year-old man has been charged after allegedly breaking into a neighbouring home and attempting to sexually assault a girl in Joliet, Illinois, on Thursday. Isaias Vargas, 23, was arrested and taken to the Will County Adult Detention Facility, where he faces charges of two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, two counts of home invasion, two counts of battery and obstructing a police officer, and unlawful restraint.
The incident unfolded on the 900 block of Richards Street just after 7:30 p.m. when authorities responded to a report from a juvenile girl claiming that a man had entered her home and was trying to sexually assault her. The victim contacted the police once more, revealing that the perpetrator, identified as Vargas, was her neighbour and had inflicted harm on her before attempting sexual acts and fleeing through the back window.
Upon arrival, officers spotted Vargas leaving the victim’s residence and gave chase. Although Joliet police officers pursued Vargas, he managed to evade them in a dense wooded area. A K9 unit and a drone were deployed to aid in the search for Vargas.
Subsequently, while monitoring the suspect’s residence, law enforcement personnel discovered Vargas hiding in a chicken coop. During interrogation, Vargas confessed to climbing through the window, searching for the girl, and attempting sexual intercourse with her. He also admitted to sexually assaulting the victim when she was younger.
The victim provided corroborative details about Thursday’s incident and the previous assault during an interview at the Will County Advocacy Center, aligning with Vargas’ confession. The State’s Attorney’s Office is collaborating with detectives and officers to prosecute the case.
