Friday, June 7, 2024 – A DCI officer who was involved in the arrest of 19-year-old Ian Njoroge after a video of him assaulting a traffic police officer in Mirema went viral has now been arrested in connection with a robbery incident.

The rogue officer, identified as Simon Macharia Mwangi, was part of a group of four police officers who trailed the accountant of Rophine International School from a bank in Utawala on Monday afternoon. They broke into his car and made away with Ksh 2.2 million.

During the arrest, a total of Ksh 473,000 believed to be part of the stolen amount was recovered from the suspects. The incident took place at Mihang’o Police Station at 4 pm on Monday when the accountant had withdrawn an amount exceeding the stolen Ksh 2.2 million, which was meant for the payment of casual workers at the school.

The suspects, who were driving a saloon car registered as KCR 959D, were following the accountant from the bank until he left with the cash. However, DCI officers from Nairobi region and Kayole obtained crucial intelligence and went to Utawala to pursue a suspect identified through CCTV analysis.

Upon arrival, they discovered that the suspect had been picked up by unknown individuals in a Subaru car. Further intelligence led the team to Kasarani station, where they ambushed the suspects in a GK vehicle and forced them to identify themselves in the presence of the Sub-County Police Commander, his deputy, and the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer.

The arrested officers were identified as Sgt Antony Ndegwa Anwal, Cpl Daniel Lekakeny Sunkuli, PC Simon Macharia Maina (of DCI Kasarani), PC Antony Mwenda (KPS Ruai), Lukas Magwaga, and Young Wakise. The DCI sub-county head confirmed that the officers were not on official duty in Utawala and were not working under his instructions.

During a search of the suspects, Ksh 350,000 was found in the car, and an additional Ksh 123,000 was retrieved from their pockets. The entire incident was captured by NTV for further investigation.
