Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A teenage girl who was involved in a relationship with her former volleyball coach, deemed inappropriate by law enforcement, is now seeking to have the no contact order lifted so she can have contact with the accused.

Lawrence Corrales submitted a motion to the Comanche County District Court on Thursday on behalf of the 19-year-old girl, who has already graduated from high school. The motion states that she wishes to have contact with Nieko “Nicko” Miranda, the former coach.

Miranda, 43, of Lawton, is facing a felony count of sexual battery, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. The allegations against him stem from an inappropriate relationship with the then-18-year-old student athlete, who was a member of the high school volleyball team that Miranda coached.

The girl’s mother contacted Lawton police after discovering that her daughter had been staying at Miranda’s house. A digital analysis of the teen’s phone revealed explicit messages between Miranda and the girl dating back to November 2023.

The messages included discussions of meeting in Miranda’s classroom, visits to his house, and explicit sexual content. Miranda referred to the girl as his “girlfriend” in some of the messages. Following the revelation of the relationship, the girl completed her schooling through virtual learning and graduated in May.

Miranda, who identified as female in detention center records, has been released on bond since March 15. As part of the bond conditions, he is prohibited from having any contact with the teen, working at any school, or being on school property.

Records indicate that Miranda is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on June 14 before Special District Judge Christine Galbraith.

Impact on the Community

The allegations against Miranda have had a significant impact on the community, particularly the students and parents at Eisenhower High School where he was employed as a computer science teacher and head girls volleyball coach. Lawton Public Schools confirmed that Miranda is no longer employed at the school.

Parents and students have expressed shock and concern over the allegations, highlighting the need for stricter guidelines and monitoring of teacher-student relationships in educational settings.

Legal Proceedings

The upcoming court hearing on June 14 will be crucial in determining the next steps in the case against Miranda. The prosecution will present evidence and arguments to support the charges of sexual battery, while Miranda’s legal team will defend against the allegations.

It remains to be seen whether the no contact order will be lifted to allow the girl to have contact with Miranda, or if the court will uphold the existing conditions of his release.

As the case unfolds, the community will be closely following the legal proceedings and hoping for a just resolution to the troubling allegations.
