A 29-year-old man from Del Rio tragically lost his life after being struck by a vehicle in the early hours of the morning. The driver responsible for the incident has been apprehended and faces serious felony charges, as confirmed by local law enforcement.
The victim, identified as Benito Omar Calvillo, was found by a passerby in a concrete drainage channel along the 1700 block of U.S. Highway 277 in the southern part of Del Rio. Del Rio Police Department’s Captain Hubert Smith, leading the criminal investigations division, provided details about the tragic incident.
Upon receiving a distress call at 6:35 a.m., officers responded to the scene where they discovered Calvillo’s lifeless body. Evidence at the site suggested a possible hit-and-run scenario, prompting the authorities to launch a thorough investigation.
Identifying the Culprit
Investigators utilised advanced technology, including license plate readers, to trace the vehicle involved in the collision. Subsequent leads led them to a black Jeep Grand Cherokee registered to a Del Rio resident.
Following a search, officers located the damaged vehicle and apprehended the driver, Karen Aida Hernandez, at a different address. Hernandez initially claimed to have hit a deer but was eventually taken into custody after further questioning.
Legal Ramifications
Hernandez, aged 30, now faces charges of collision causing personal injury or death, a serious second-degree felony. Authorities believe the incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. while Hernandez was returning from her workplace in Eagle Pass, with no apparent connection to the victim.
In the wake of the tragedy, Calvillo’s body has been transferred to the Webb County Medical Examiner’s Office in Laredo for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause and manner of death.
