New Hampshire Superior Court Judge N. William Delker delivered a harsh sentence to Thomas Humphrey, ordering him to serve 40 years to life in a state correctional facility for the murder of his mother. Humphrey pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for the fatal attack on his mother, as well as felony arson for burning her body. In addition to the life sentence, he received a suspended sentence of five to 10 years for the arson charge.

The incident occurred on December 4, 2023, when Humphrey and his mother got into an argument over the volume of a video game he was playing on a PlayStation console she had given him. The argument escalated, leading Humphrey to fatally stab his mother 22 times and then set her body on fire.

Emergency services responded to the scene and discovered the active fire in the home. Upon entering, they found Linda Tufts dead from multiple stab wounds, with Humphrey holding a knife. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of self-inflicted injuries before being charged in connection with his mother’s death.

Community Shock and Grief

Neighbours expressed shock at the tragic events, revealing that Humphrey’s parents had previously kicked him out of their home before allowing him to return. His father was reportedly at work at the time of the attack, leaving Linda Tufts vulnerable to her son’s violent outburst.
