A public memorial service for fallen Gila River police officer Joshua Briese is scheduled to take place this weekend in Gilbert, Arizona. The service will be held on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Sun Valley Community Church – South Gilbert located at 5545 South Lindsay Road. For those who wish to make a donation in honor of Officer Briese, contributions can be made through the AZ 100 Club, a charitable organization supporting first responders and their families.
Officer Briese was tragically shot while responding to a disturbance call at a home in the Gila River Indian Community village of Santan. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, resulting in the deaths of Officer Briese and another individual, 23-year-old Alicen Apkaw. Four others were also injured in the shooting.
Officer Briese, who had been with the Gila River Police Department for less than a year and had not completed field training, bravely responded to the scene along with another tribal police officer. Both officers were struck by multiple gunshots during the altercation.
Despite efforts to save their lives, Officer Briese and Alicen Apkaw succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. The other officer involved in the incident is currently in serious but stable condition.
Authorities have confirmed that two individuals are in custody in connection to the shooting, and the investigation is ongoing to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
In a heartbreaking twist of fate, Officer Briese’s father, police officer David Briese, also lost his life in the line of duty in a car crash in 2006. Nearly two decades later, Joshua Briese followed in his father’s footsteps, sacrificing his life to protect others.
