Patrick Demond Mix, 44, Greenfield

HANCOCK COUNTY — Patrick Demond Mix, a 44-year-old resident of Greenfield, appeared in court this week to face charges related to a recent incident involving law enforcement.

According to court documents, Mix has been charged with a Level 4 felony for unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, a Level 6 felony for resisting law enforcement using a vehicle, a Class A misdemeanor for resisting law enforcement, and a Class C misdemeanor for operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration above the legal limit.

The case against Mix was officially opened in Hancock County Superior Court 1 on Monday, June 3. Mix had his initial appearance on Tuesday, June 4, where Judge D.J. Davis set a $12,000 cash bond. Mix is scheduled to appear in court again on Wednesday, June 19.

Police Chase and K-9 Incident

The charges against Mix stem from an incident on Sunday, June 2, when Greenfield Police Department patrolman Caleb Freeman and his K-9 partner Ace were on patrol. Freeman initiated a traffic stop after observing Mix committing a traffic infraction on North State Street. Upon speaking with Mix, Freeman suspected intoxication.

As Freeman waited for backup, Mix fled in his vehicle, leading to a pursuit. Mix eventually stopped on E. Park Avenue and attempted to escape on foot. Freeman released K-9 Ace to apprehend Mix, but Ace was tragically struck by a vehicle on North Spring Street during the pursuit.

Ace was rushed to Indy-Vet Emergency and Specialty Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment. Despite sustaining injuries, Ace is expected to recover. The K-9 is currently resting at home and will require time off to fully heal before returning to duty.

Legal Ramifications

During the incident, Mix admitted to consuming alcohol and failed field sobriety tests. His blood alcohol concentration was measured at .095, above the legal limit. Additionally, officers discovered an open container of alcohol and a firearm in Mix’s possession.

Freeman, aware of Mix’s prior felony record for armed robbery, had called for backup before Mix attempted to flee. The combination of alcohol consumption, attempted escape, and possession of a firearm led to the charges filed against Mix.

As the legal process unfolds, Mix will need to address the serious allegations against him. The community awaits further developments in this case as law enforcement works to ensure public safety.
