Accident – Death – Obituary News : Less than 24 hours before Richard Fultz III was tragically shot and killed while behind the wheel of a vehicle in Marrero, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office investigators revealed that his current girlfriend initiated a violent confrontation with his ex-girlfriend near her Ames Boulevard home. This altercation ultimately set off a deadly chain of events that would claim Fultz’s life.

Fortunately, neither Fultz’s ex-girlfriend nor the 6-year-old daughter they shared were harmed when Madonna Mays, Fultz’s current girlfriend, opened fire on April 7. However, the gunfire prompted the woman’s brother, Dashawn Washington, 29, to retaliate. Washington reportedly fired 14 rounds from a rifle at Fultz as he sat at a stop sign, resulting in the tragic loss of Fultz’s life.

Following the incident, Washington and his alleged accomplice, Charles Coler, 31, were arrested and charged with second-degree murder and obstruction of justice. During a hearing in Jefferson Parish Magistrate Court, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office Detective Blaine Howard provided testimony about the events leading up to the homicide.

Washington’s attorney, Barry Ranshi, argued that his client acted in self-defence due to the perceived threat posed by Fultz’s violent reputation and the gunfire directed at his sister. However, Jefferson Parish Assistant District Attorney Tommy Block refuted these claims, stating that there was no evidence to suggest Washington was in imminent danger.

The fatal shooting of Fultz occurred on April 8 near the 6200 block of Lapalco Boulevard. Deputies discovered Fultz dead inside a bullet-riddled Dodge Challenger that had crashed in the median. Howard revealed that Fultz sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head and back, indicating a targeted attack.

Surveillance footage captured the moment when Washington exited a Honda Acura, fired shots at Fultz’s vehicle, and then fled the scene. Through investigative efforts, authorities were able to link Washington to Coler and place them at the crime scene at the time of the homicide using cell phone records.

In the aftermath of Fultz’s death, Coler took steps to alter the appearance of the Acura, including cancelling the license plate and removing distinctive features. Additionally, Coler’s brother, Terrell Carter, reportedly assisted in concealing the vehicle and transporting it to Washington’s residence.

The feud between Fultz’s current girlfriend, Madonna Mays, and his ex-girlfriend played a significant role in the events leading up to the fatal shooting. Mays believed that her rival was still involved with Fultz, leading to a year-long feud between the two women. This animosity culminated in Mays firing shots at Fultz’s ex-girlfriend’s vehicle, narrowly missing her and the young child present in the car.

Mays was later arrested and charged with aggravated criminal damage to property for her involvement in the shooting incident. Despite attempts to justify Washington’s actions as self-defence, the court ruled that there was sufficient evidence to hold him and Coler on charges of second-degree murder and obstruction of justice.

Ultimately, the tragic loss of Richard Fultz III serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of interpersonal conflicts turned violent. The legal proceedings surrounding his death continue to unfold as authorities seek justice for the senseless loss of life..
