20-year-old Elian Raya from Joliet has been taken into custody and charged with Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding a Peace Officer. The incident unfolded on June 2, 2024, at 2:40 p.m. when officers attempted to pull over a Nissan Sentra near Garnsey Avenue and Elwood Avenue. This was part of an investigation into a homicide that occurred in the 400 block of Krakar Avenue the day before.
The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Raya, refused to stop and instead accelerated away from the officers. A high-speed pursuit ensued, with the Nissan heading southbound on Collins Street towards East Jefferson Street. The chase continued towards the intersection of Fourth Avenue and South Chicago Street before the vehicle entered westbound Interstate 80.
Despite the erratic driving behaviour exhibited by the suspect, law enforcement officers managed to track the Nissan as it transitioned onto northbound Interstate 55 and then onto northbound Route 59 before heading westbound on Jefferson Street in Shorewood. The pursuit culminated on North Brookshore Drive where the vehicle turned onto Deerwood Drive, leaving the road and driving through a residential yard.
The chase came to a dramatic end when the Nissan, attempting to evade capture, struck an officer’s squad car at the intersection of Deerwood Drive and Arrowhead Drive. The vehicle ultimately came to a stop in a ditch, allowing officers to apprehend Raya without further incident. Following his arrest, Raya was taken to the Joliet Police Department for processing and multiple citations were issued.
The Joliet Police Department has stated that the investigation into this incident is ongoing and no additional information will be disclosed at this time. The department expressed gratitude to their law enforcement partners for their assistance in bringing the pursuit to a safe conclusion.
