A 21-year-old who went missing nearly a month ago is now presumed dead after a “significant amount of blood” was discovered at his best friend’s home, according to law enforcement in Florida.
Although his body has not yet been located, two men have been taken into custody in connection with his death, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd revealed during a news briefing on Monday.
Sheriff Judd stated, “We have every reason to believe at this point that Ethan Fussell is a victim of murder.”
Ethan Fussell had been staying with a 25-year-old individual, whom he referred to as his best friend and “brother,” when an altercation ensued between the two, as per deputies. Fussell was last heard from on May 7 and has not been seen since, authorities reported.
Upon searching the Lakeland residence where Fussell had been residing, investigators uncovered a “significant amount of blood” and indications of efforts to tidy up a crime scene.
The blood has now been confirmed to belong to Fussell, Sheriff Judd announced.
On Sunday, Fussell’s 25-year-old best friend was apprehended, along with another 21-year-old individual who also lived in the property, according to the sheriff’s office. Both suspects are facing charges of accessory after the fact of a capital felony and destroying/tampering with evidence, Judd disclosed.
Appeal for Information
The sheriff urged anyone with information to step forward as the investigation remains ongoing.
Described by his family as a “smart, hardworking, and loyal man,” Fussell had not been in regular contact with his relatives lately.
“So while we don’t know a lot about his recent life, we KNOW who he’s been most of his life and who he is at his core,” his mother wrote on Facebook. “He’s survived so much trauma in the past. We pray he survives this and comes home soon.”
Lakeland is located approximately 35 miles east of downtown Tampa.
