Police from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) are currently investigating a tragic incident that unfolded at the intersection of 6th and D Streets NW.

According to reports from MPD, the incident took place on Monday, June 3, 2024, at around 1:11 p.m. A 22-year-old woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, left her family’s side while they were at Washington Hospital Center. Simultaneously, a Mazda SUV arrived at the hospital entrance, with the driver stepping out to fetch a wheelchair for their mother, who was a passenger in the vehicle. Seizing the opportunity, the 22-year-old woman jumped into the driver’s seat of the Mazda and drove off with the mother still inside.

As the Mazda proceeded northbound in the 400 block of 6th Street, Northwest, the driver attempted to make a left turn onto D Street, Northwest. Unfortunately, the driver failed to navigate the turn successfully, resulting in a collision with the building located at 601 D Street, Northwest. Despite the impact, the driver exited the vehicle and tried to escape on foot but was promptly apprehended by a vigilant MPD captain.

Tragically, the passenger, identified as 55-year-old Leslie Marie Gaines from Northeast, was rushed to a local hospital following the crash. Regrettably, she was pronounced deceased upon arrival at the medical facility.

Following consultations with the United States Attorney’s Office, the suspect, 22-year-old Kayla Kenisha Brown from Southeast, has been charged with Felony Murder, Kidnapping, and Carjacking in connection to the incident.

As the investigation continues, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to establish the cause and manner of death for the deceased victim.

The Metropolitan Police Department extends its gratitude to the United States Attorney’s Office and the United States Marshals for their invaluable assistance at the crash site.
