Accident – Death – Obituary News : A man from San Diego is currently facing manslaughter charges in connection with the tragic death of a 12-year-old girl who was struck and killed by a jet ski while paddleboarding on Mission Bay. The accused, Arsanyous Ghaly, 19, allegedly hit the girl, known only as Savannah, in July 2023, just 30 feet from the shore on a day when the conditions were perfect.

Despite efforts by first responders to revive her after she was brought to shore, Savannah was pronounced dead at the hospital. Testifying in a preliminary hearing, lifeguard John Kerr revealed that he had warned a man on a green jet ski, identified as Ghaly, for speeding near the cove where the speed limit is set at five miles-per-hour.

According to Kerr, the jet ski was traveling at an ‘incredibly high rate of speed,’ and another witness claimed that it raced towards the girl at around 30 to 35 miles-per-hour. Additionally, moments after stopping Ghaly, another man with a similar jet ski, identified as Ghaly’s cousin, was pulled over for speeding and acted belligerently when asked for his boater’s card.

Kerr further mentioned that Ghaly drove dangerously close to the area where the second man was stopped, prompting him to warn both individuals about the potential risks of their actions. The second driver’s jet ski was impounded, and Ghaly left the scene. As Kerr was towing the impounded jet ski to shore, he heard a radio call about a crash 300 yards away.

Ghaly’s defense lawyers raised concerns about Kerr’s identification of the second jet ski driver, questioning the accuracy of his testimony. However, Officer Alyssa Tutterow of the SDPD confirmed that Ghaly admitted to being the driver at the scene, claiming ignorance of the speed limit and the absence of a boater’s card.

Data retrieved from the Yamaha Jet-Ski indicated that the vessel was traveling at a speed between 47-53 miles per hour with no evidence of braking. The court is now awaiting a judge’s decision on whether there is sufficient evidence from the preliminary hearings to proceed to a full trial for Ghaly.

The case has garnered significant attention, highlighting the importance of water safety regulations and responsible boating practices. The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with reckless behavior on the water, emphasizing the need for adherence to speed limits and boating regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future..
