Carl O’Brien, aged 51, was recently handed a suspended jail sentence, a fine, and a requirement to complete unpaid work following an incident at a Leeds United football match.

The incident took place during the evening fixture between Leeds United and Nottingham Forest at Elland Road on April 4, 2023. It was reported that O’Brien assaulted a female steward by putting his hand around her throat and squeezing it as spectators were leaving the stadium.

The victim sustained minor injuries as a result of the assault and was able to identify O’Brien to the police. He was swiftly arrested and later charged with intentional strangulation, appearing before Leeds Magistrates’ Court on April 9.

During his sentencing hearing at Leeds Crown Court on May 29, O’Brien was given a 20-month suspended prison sentence, ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work, and fined £187. Chief Superintendent Russell Hughes condemned the act of violence against match stewards, stating that such behavior is not tolerated.

Chief Superintendent Hughes emphasized that West Yorkshire Police takes incidents like this seriously and works closely with football clubs to investigate and take action against offenders. O’Brien has been banned from attending any football fixture as a result of his actions.

“Violence against match stewards is absolutely unacceptable, and individuals who engage in such behavior have no place in football grounds in West Yorkshire or anywhere else in the country,” Chief Superintendent Hughes stated.

It is important to remember that respect and sportsmanship should always be upheld at sporting events, and any acts of violence or aggression will be dealt with accordingly by the authorities.
