A Denver man has been accused of attempted murder and animal cruelty following a tragic incident in downtown Berthoud, Colorado. The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office reported that the man, identified as 38-year-old Van Radley, allegedly tried to run over a deputy before causing a crash that resulted in injuries to himself, his two passengers, and the death of a dog.
The Events Leading Up to the Crash
On the night of May 18, a Larimer County Sheriff’s Office deputy spotted a sedan near Interstate 25 and Highway 56 in Johnstown with no license plates. When the deputy tried to pull over the vehicle, the driver accelerated and led the authorities on a high-speed chase into Berthoud, reaching speeds exceeding 100 mph.
As the sedan approached downtown Berthoud, another deputy attempted to stop the vehicle using tire spikes. However, the driver swerved towards the deputy, forcing him to evade being struck. The sedan then rolled over, landing on a Larimer County Sheriff’s Office K9 vehicle and causing significant damage.
The Aftermath of the Crash
Following the crash, deputies managed to extract Radley and his two passengers from the wrecked car. All three individuals sustained injuries and were promptly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Tragically, a dog that was also in the vehicle did not survive the crash.
Upon further investigation, authorities discovered that Radley had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant in Larimer County and a felony parole hold warrant in Weld County at the time of the incident.
The Charges Against Radley
Radley now faces a slew of serious charges in connection with the crash, including first-degree attempted murder after deliberation, first-degree attempted murder with extreme indifference, second-degree kidnapping, vehicular eluding involving injury, aggravated cruelty to animals, vehicular assault, and false reporting identity to law enforcement.
Currently, Radley is being held in the Weld County Jail with a bond set at $75,000 cash or surety. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 5.
