The counterintelligence unit of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has successfully foiled a series of planned terrorist attacks orchestrated by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) against Ukraine’s Defense Forces servicemen in the frontline city of Zaporizhzhia, located in southeastern Ukraine.
The SBU’s swift action led to the apprehension of a Ukrainian man who was operating as a Russian agent and was in the process of plotting to detonate explosive devices targeting vehicles belonging to employees of local military enlistment offices.
The captured individual now faces the prospect of life imprisonment for committing acts of state treason during a period of martial law, as revealed in an official SBU statement on Telegram.
Under direct instructions from the FSB, the agent was assigned the task of identifying designated vehicles before planting remote-controlled improvised explosive devices underneath them.
Reports indicate that the agent meticulously surveilled parking lots near military enlistment offices on a daily basis to pinpoint potential targets. Detailed directives were received from his Russian handler concerning the precise timing and execution methods for the planned attacks utilizing explosive devices.
The SBU managed to intercept the agent while he was conducting reconnaissance near a Defense Forces facility, preventing any terrorist incidents from taking place. Subsequently, a mobile phone containing incriminating evidence related to his illicit activities was seized from the individual.
Furthermore, investigations unveiled that the suspect had also been covertly monitoring transformer substations in Zaporizhzhia, a critical infrastructure that had been targeted by Russian forces in previous incidents, exacerbating Ukraine’s energy crisis.
According to the probe, the agent was identified as a security guard employed at a local energy company, who had been recruited by the FSB remotely in April of the current year. His recruitment was facilitated through his daughter, who currently resides in Moscow and collaborates with the Russian special service.
