The fatal crash occurred at the intersection of Wesley Parkway and West 6th Street when Staten, driving a 2012 Ford Expedition, ran a red light and collided with another vehicle. Both vehicles veered off the road and collided with a traffic signal pole, resulting in the deaths of two individuals in the struck vehicle, a 2009 Ford Fusion. The deceased have been identified as Terry Frisbie, aged 51, of Sioux City and Judith Jordan, aged 50, of Le Mars, Iowa. Frisbie was the driver, and Jordan was the passenger.

After the collision, Staten fled the scene on foot and was not located until the following day when he turned himself in to authorities. During a police interview, Staten confessed to being the driver of the 2012 Ford Expedition and admitted to consuming alcohol and marijuana before the crash.

Several months after surrendering himself to authorities, police announced in April 2024 that they were searching for Staten, leading to his eventual arrest in Alabama.
