ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The community of Allentown is reeling from the tragic loss of 25-year-old Angel Martinez-Velez, who was fatally shot multiple times on Saturday night at Fountain Hill Park. The victim’s identity was confirmed by the coroner, leaving his loved ones devastated and the neighbourhood in shock.

The incident took place on the basketball court in the park, where a growing memorial now stands as a tribute to Martinez-Velez. Among those who came to pay their respects was a woman who described him as her best friend.

Gigi, who preferred not to disclose her last name, shared fond memories of Martinez-Velez, highlighting his role as a loving partner, devoted father, and a well-known figure in the community. She expressed deep sorrow over his untimely death, wishing she could turn back time.

As Martinez-Velez’s family grapples with the heartbreaking loss, the non-profit organization Promise Neighborhoods of the Lehigh Valley has extended its support. Director of Operations Jeani Garcia emphasized the interconnectedness of the community in times of tragedy, noting that they are working closely with the family to provide assistance and comfort.

This unfortunate incident is not the first instance of deadly violence in Allentown this year. Another memorial on Dauphin St. serves as a reminder of 33-year-old Miguel Dalmasi, who was fatally shot back in February. Garcia reflected on the prevalence of gun-related deaths in the area, revealing that Martinez-Velez’s family has also experienced a similar tragedy in the past.

With a renewed commitment to preventing further loss of life, Promise Neighborhoods has erected a sign at the memorial site, calling for an end to gun violence. Garcia urged community members to engage in dialogue with their loved ones about the dangers of carrying weapons, emphasising the need for proactive intervention.

Despite ongoing efforts, Allentown Police have yet to identify a suspect in Martinez-Velez’s shooting, leaving the community on edge as they seek justice for the young victim. As the investigation continues, the community remains united in their call for peace and safety for all residents.
