AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Authorities in Akron are conducting a thorough investigation into a tragic shooting that took place at a street party over the weekend. The incident, which resulted in the death of one individual and left 24 others injured, is believed to have been carried out by at least one individual who opened fire on the crowd from a vehicle.
According to Police Chief Brian Harding, the scene of the shooting was scattered with over 35 shell casings, indicating the severity of the incident. The shooting occurred in the early hours of Sunday while more than 100 people were gathered to celebrate a birthday.
During their investigation, authorities discovered two handguns at the scene and suspect that some partygoers may have retaliated by firing back at the vehicle. The street where the shooting took place was left in disarray, with plastic cups, shoes, and other debris strewn across the area.
Call for Witnesses
As of Sunday night, no suspects had been identified in connection with the shooting. Mayor Shammas Malik and Police Chief Brian Harding are urging any witnesses to come forward with information. Rewards totaling $22,500 have been offered by various agencies for details leading to an arrest.
Mayor Malik stated, “The sheer number of victims is shocking and disconcerting. I want to be very clear: Anyone who was involved in last night’s shooting will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
Victims Identified
The individual who tragically lost his life in the shooting has been identified as Lateris Cook, a 27-year-old resident of Akron. The wounded individuals range in age from 19 to 43, with at least two reported to be in critical condition.
Police had previously responded to noise complaints at the party on Saturday night, attempting to disperse the crowd. Despite the presence of over 200 individuals, including those setting off fireworks, no arrests were made at that time. Many of the partygoers later returned to the scene, leading to the tragic shooting incident.

Mayor Malik emphasised the importance of holding those responsible for violence accountable in order to ensure the safety of the community. He stated, “We have to hold people accountable when they commit violence. That’s the only way to keep our communities safe.”
