Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A tragic incident unfolded near the tea gardens at Puthukkad in Valparai on Saturday evening, resulting in the untimely death of an 18-year-old youth. The victim, identified as S Mukesh, was a second-year BSc computer science student who fell prey to a wild elephant attack while riding a bike with his friend Chandrabose on the Sholayar dam estate road at 6 pm.

While Chandrabose managed to escape unscathed, Mukesh was not as fortunate and was attacked by the wild animal after falling off his bike. Locals acted swiftly, rushing him to the Murugali estate hospital before transferring him to Valparai GH. Tragically, Mukesh succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital. The following day, a postmortem was conducted, and his body was eventually handed over to his grieving family. In a gesture of compassion, an initial solatium of £50,000 was provided to Mukesh’s father, Suresh.

According to forest officials, the fatal attack resulted in Mukesh suffering a rib fracture as the elephant used its trunk to push him, inadvertently puncturing his lungs and leading to his demise. In response to this tragic incident, the forest department has deployed a team of 14 staff members split into two groups to redirect elephants back into the safety of the forest, particularly as some of these majestic creatures have been straying perilously close to the roadside.

The specific elephant responsible for the attack, which had wandered a considerable distance of 3 km from the Sholayar dam road, is not deemed aggressive and is under constant monitoring by the forest authorities to prevent any further untoward incidents.
