The Florida Highway Patrol has reported that a man has been taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence following a crash in Brevard County that left three individuals injured, including a 1-year-old child.
The incident took place on Friday at approximately 11:15 p.m. on Interstate 95 in Melbourne. According to troopers, the driver of a Lexus failed to decelerate as it approached a Toyota, with the Toyota reportedly travelling at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour in a 70-mile-per-hour zone.
Subsequently, the Lexus collided with the rear of the Toyota, causing the latter to veer off the road and overturn, ultimately striking a traffic sign.
Upon interviewing the driver, identified as Thomas Roberts Jr., FHP officers noted bloodshot eyes, a strong smell of alcohol, and slurred speech. Following a series of sobriety tests, Roberts Jr. was placed under arrest for driving under the influence.
The 1-year-old child involved in the crash was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital and is currently in a stable condition. Another passenger was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center with severe injuries, including a head trauma, broken clavicle, and leg fracture.
A third passenger was taken to Viera Hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, Roberts Jr. has been detained at Brevard County Jail and is facing multiple DUI charges.
