Accident – Death – Obituary News : Bhopal: A senior citizen, aged 88, fell victim to an online scam orchestrated by an unidentified fraudster. The fraudster, posing as a bank official, managed to deceive the elderly man into believing that he needed to update his life certificate in his pension account. Subsequently, the scammer siphoned off a total of Rs 70,000 from the elderly man’s bank account through two separate transactions.

The incident came to light when the victim’s son, Anurag Sharma, residing in Mumbai, lodged a complaint with the Arera Hills police. Anurag explained in his online complaint that his father, Piyush Chandra Sharma, who is currently in the USA, had received a call from an unknown individual claiming to be a bank representative. The caller insisted that the life certificate needed to be updated in order to avoid the pension account being blocked.

Despite Piyush’s absence from the country, the fraudster coerced him into providing access to his mobile phone. This enabled the scammer to carry out the unauthorized transactions, resulting in the significant loss of funds from the elderly man’s bank account. Upon realizing the deception, Piyush promptly informed his son, leading to the filing of a formal complaint by Anurag with the Arera Hills police station.

In response to the complaint, the Arera Hills police initiated an investigation and registered a case against the unknown fraudster on charges of fraud. ASI Mukesh Sthapak, the investigating officer, affirmed the seriousness of the matter and assured that efforts were underway to identify and apprehend the culprit responsible for the financial exploitation of the elderly man.

This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of online fraud and the vulnerability of unsuspecting individuals, particularly the elderly, to such deceptive schemes. It underscores the importance of vigilance and caution when dealing with financial transactions and sharing sensitive information, especially over the phone or online.

As the investigation progresses, authorities are committed to pursuing justice for the victim and holding the perpetrator accountable for their deceitful actions.
