Nayyer Abbas Syed : Grandfather Kills 3 Family Members in Maryland – 95.5 WSB

ELKRIDGE, Md. — Three family members were tragically killed and another left critically injured in an apparent murder-suicide that took place in Elkridge, Maryland, on Thursday night.

Residents in the area alerted authorities after hearing gunshots at a townhouse in Elkridge on Thursday evening, as reported by The Associated Press. The suspect also contacted the police, confessing to shooting his family members and revealing his intention to take his own life, according to Howard County Police spokesperson Sherry Llewellyn during a news briefing on Friday.

All of the victims resided in the townhouse, while the suspect did not, as per The AP.

The suspect was identified as Nayyer Abbas Syed, 61, by the Howard County Police Department. The victims were identified as his wife, Syeda Aalia, 57; his daughter, Syeda Fatima, 25; and his daughter-in-law, Alizey Fatima, 33. Unfortunately, all of them were pronounced dead at the scene. Syed’s son, Muhammad Ali Hamza, 31, is currently in critical condition at the hospital.

Despite the tragic incident, Syed’s three-month-old granddaughter was found unharmed in the home. The police conducted a wellness check and ensured she was placed in the care of a family member.

Speaking on the incident, Llewellyn expressed, “This was an isolated incident, a very, very sad one. We’re doing everything we can to work with family members and the surviving son to make sure we’re doing what we can to help them,” as reported by WBAL.

The motive behind the tragic murder-suicide remains unknown, Llewellyn shared. She mentioned, “We really don’t know what led up to the incident, but we’re going to do some investigating into cellphone records and text messages to gather more information,” as reported by WBAL.

As the investigation continues, the community and authorities are left grappling with the devastating aftermath of this heartbreaking event.
