Accident – Death – Obituary News :

An Augusta man, Kelvin Laron Howard, aged 68, has been handed a prison sentence of nearly 15 years after being found guilty of drug trafficking and illegal gun possession.

Howard was convicted of possession with intent to distribute heroin, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Following the verdict, he was sentenced to 175 months in prison, fined $2,500, and will serve three years of supervised release upon completion of his term.

Despite his conviction, Howard is not eligible for parole.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, in their investigation, identified Howard as a prominent heroin dealer operating in the Augusta area. During a search of his residence, law enforcement officials discovered over 700 doses of heroin, drug scales, packaging materials, nearly $1,000 in cash, and a loaded semiautomatic pistol.

After a trial in December 2023, Howard was found guilty on all charges.

Community Support and Law Enforcement Efforts

Commenting on the case, Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree stated, “The arrest and subsequent conviction of Kelvin Howard by way of a jury trial is an example of the community’s support we have in Richmond County. Mr. Howard was not only identified as participating in illegal drug activity, but he was also found to have a firearm in his possession as a convicted felon. His conviction has the potential to save lives by having one less illegal firearm on the streets and illegal drugs in our community.”

Impact on Public Safety

The successful prosecution of Howard underscores law enforcement’s commitment to combatting drug trafficking and removing illegal firearms from the streets. By holding individuals like Howard accountable for their actions, authorities aim to create safer communities and protect residents from the harmful effects of drug-related crimes.
