Missing Person’s Case on Big Island Now Investigated as Murder-Suicide, Says Big Island Police

Authorities on the Big Island have revealed that what was initially a missing person’s case has now turned into a tragic murder-suicide investigation. According to Big Island police, the case involves a 38-year-old woman from Keaau.

Initial Report and Search

The woman was reported missing on May 21 by her boyfriend, who stated that she had not been seen for about a week. The case took a significant turn on May 23 when police executed a search warrant at a residence in Keaau. Upon identifying themselves, officers heard a loud “pop” that sounded like a gunshot coming from inside the home.

Due to the potential presence of an armed and barricaded individual, the Special Response and Crisis Negotiation Teams were called in to assist in the situation.

Discovery of Deceased Male

Upon entering the residence, authorities found the body of a deceased male who had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. This individual was later confirmed to be the missing woman’s boyfriend, also aged 38.

Following the securement of the scene, police uncovered information that led them to search for the missing woman’s body on vacant, undeveloped land. On May 23, her remains were discovered in an advanced state of decomposition, with recovery efforts taking place the next morning.

Autopsy Results

An autopsy conducted on May 31 by a forensic pathologist revealed that the woman had died from a single gunshot wound to the head. The death was officially ruled as a homicide, and the body was positively identified as that of the missing 38-year-old woman from Keaau.

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the case to contact Big Island police at (808) 961-2381. For those who wish to remain anonymous, island-wide Crime Stoppers can be reached at (808) 961-8300.
