An inmate’s death at the Eastern Correctional Institute in Westover is currently under investigation by Maryland State Police, who are treating the case as a homicide. The victim has been identified as 49-year-old Eugene B. Stanford, who was serving a sentence for a burglary conviction in Talbot County. The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services has called in outside investigators following the conclusion of an autopsy that determined Stanford was killed.

Authorities have revealed that another inmate is suspected to be involved in the slaying of Stanford, but his identity has not been disclosed pending the filing of charges. The cause of death has not been publicly disclosed, as state police cited the ongoing nature of the investigation.

The investigation is set to be presented to the Somerset County State’s Attorney’s Office for further action. Eastern Correctional Institute, where the incident took place, is situated in Somerset County, approximately two-and-a-half hours southeast of Baltimore.
