PRINCESS ANNE, MD — The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the tragic homicide of 49-year-old state prison inmate Eugene Stanford at the Eastern Correctional Institution in Somerset County. Stanford was pronounced dead by emergency medical personnel following the incident.

The distressing event took place on the previous day at around 3:30 p.m., but it was not until today at 12:45 p.m. that the Homicide Unit was informed by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit (DPSCS IIU). Preliminary findings from the autopsy pointed towards foul play, prompting the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to classify Stanford’s death as a homicide.

Authorities have identified a fellow inmate as a suspect in connection to Stanford’s untimely demise. As the investigation progresses, charges have not yet been filed, and the identity of the suspect is being withheld pending further inquiries.

Collaborative efforts between investigators from the State Police and the DPSCS IIU are in full swing to unravel the circumstances surrounding Stanford’s tragic death. Upon the conclusion of the investigation, all relevant information will be forwarded to the Somerset County State’s Attorney’s Office to determine the most appropriate charges to be laid.
