Running through the airport in sheer panic, Lars Joachim Mittank’s final moments were captured on CCTV at Varna Airport in Bulgaria, leaving a trail of unanswered questions.
At 28 years old, Lars was on a boys trip with friends when he was seen vaulting over a two-metre fence before disappearing into the nearby woodland next to the motorway.
His chilling disappearance led to him being dubbed as the “most famous missing person on YouTube”, with countless conspiracy theories circulating around the internet as sleuths analyze the unsettling footage in an attempt to unravel the mystery.
However, despite the efforts to solve the case, the circumstances surrounding Lars’ vanishing act remain shrouded in ambiguity.
The Mysterious Disappearance
Lars’ unsettling tale began in July 2014 during a boys holiday to Bulgaria from his native Germany with five friends.
After a night of drinking in Varna, Lars got into a confrontation with some German nationals and left his friends outside the bar, disappearing into the night.
He returned to the hotel the following morning with injuries, claiming he had been attacked by four men, resulting in a jaw injury and ruptured eardrum.
Despite being advised by a doctor not to fly due to his injuries, Lars insisted on staying alone at the Hotel Color Varna near the airport.
A Disturbing Phone Call
It was at the hotel that Lars made a haunting phone call to his mother, whispering about people following him and urging her to cancel his credit cards.
He expressed his fear of being robbed or killed, sending his mother into a state of panic over the phone.
His behaviour at the hotel grew increasingly erratic, pacing in the hallway, hiding in the lift, and constantly looking out of windows along the corridors.
Lars later made his way to the airport, where his bizarre actions were captured on camera as he expressed his fear of dying and ran out of the airport.
The Search for Answers
Despite extensive searches and investigations, no concrete leads have emerged in Lars’ case.
Various theories have been proposed, including drug-induced paranoia, reactions to medication, or involvement in human trafficking or organised crime in Bulgaria.
His family, including his mother Sandra, continue to hold out hope for his return, posting updates on social media and distributing missing person flyers.
Despite the passage of time, the search for Lars Mittank continues, with his family refusing to give up on finding him.
