The Gila River Indian Community, located south of Phoenix, was rocked by a tragic shooting incident in the early hours of Saturday morning. The incident resulted in the loss of a tribal police officer and another community member, with a police officer and at least three other individuals sustaining injuries.

Unclear Details Surrounding the Incident

Details of the incident, which occurred at 2 a.m. in Santan, are still unclear. The Gila River Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting a disturbance at a home in the community. The FBI and tribal police are currently investigating the incident, which was described as a “large scene” by FBI Phoenix spokesman Kevin Smith.

Upon arrival at the home, officers were met with a large crowd where multiple gunshots were fired. Two officers, including Officer Joshua Briese, were struck by gunfire, along with four other individuals. Tragically, Officer Briese and another community member succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

Officer in Serious but Stable Condition

The wounded police officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, underwent surgery and is currently in a “serious but stable” condition. The names and conditions of the other wounded individuals have not been released to the public.

Officer Briese, who had been serving as a police officer for less than a year and was still undergoing field training, was mourned by the department. Teaya Enos, a department spokesperson, refrained from providing additional details about the incident.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities have not revealed the exact number of police officers and individuals present at the home during the shooting. The motive behind the gunfire, whether the police officers discharged their weapons, and the presence of any arrests have not been disclosed.

Tribal Gov. Stephen Roe Lewis expressed his condolences, stating, “Nothing cuts deeper than a life cut short.” He emphasised the need for a comprehensive understanding of the incident and assured close coordination with law enforcement agencies.
