Accident – Death – Obituary News : Delaware State Police are currently investigating an officer-involved shooting incident that took place in Wilmington on the evening of May 31, 2024. The incident involved a 36-year-old man identified as Jonathan Kreiser from Smyrna, Delaware, who was reported to be suicidal.

According to preliminary investigation reports, two teenagers on Ferris Road spotted Kreiser walking in the street while brandishing a gun and making alarming statements indicating his desire to be shot. One of the teens managed to convince Kreiser to put down the weapon, after which they removed the gun’s magazine and placed both items on the sidewalk. The teens then promptly called 911 to report the unsettling encounter.

Upon the arrival of law enforcement officers at the scene, a trooper engaged in negotiations with Kreiser. Despite repeated commands to show his concealed hand, Kreiser refused to comply. He proceeded to pick up the gun from the sidewalk, load the magazine, and turn towards the trooper, prompting the officer to discharge his firearm at Kreiser.

Following the shooting, medical aid was administered to Kreiser by troopers until EMS arrived to transport him to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Thankfully, no other individuals were harmed during the incident. Subsequently, Kreiser was charged with Aggravated Menacing and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections upon posting a $21,000 cash bond.

Further investigations revealed that Kreiser had been the subject of a Gold Alert issued by the Smyrna Police Department earlier that day. The alert indicated that Kreiser had taken his brother’s firearm and was in a suicidal state.

In accordance with standard procedures, the involved trooper has been placed on administrative leave pending a thorough use of force investigation in collaboration with the Delaware Department of Justice.
