A student at Lawrence County Career and Technical Center is facing criminal charges after being found in possession of nicotine vapes and a knife in her purse while at school. New Castle police have charged 19-year-old Amber Marie Collette from Randolph Street following an incident that took place on May 17. The charges were officially filed in the court of District Judge Rick Russo on Thursday.

Incident Details

According to a criminal complaint, a school resource officer, who is a city police officer, was informed by a principal about a student who had left the restroom smelling of marijuana. The principal identified the student as Collette and, upon questioning her, was granted permission to search her purse. During the search, the principal discovered six nicotine vapes and a pocket knife in the student’s possession. Although no marijuana was found, the items were confiscated.

Charges Faced

As a result of the incident, Collette has been charged with possession of a weapon on school property and prohibited use of tobacco products within the school premises. She will receive a summons to appear in court to address these charges.

School’s Response

Leonard Rich, the executive director of the career and technical center, stated that any disciplinary actions taken against Collette will be kept confidential in accordance with student privacy guidelines. Rich emphasised that all student violations are dealt with appropriately under the school’s discipline code, and at this time, expulsion is not being considered.

It is important to note that suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in court.
