Accident – Death – Obituary News :

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – A 38-year-old man from Evansville is facing charges of auto theft after allegedly being caught driving a stolen Mercedes in the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to reports, officers received an alert from a Flock Camera indicating that a grey 2015 Mercedes, reported stolen, was travelling westbound on Washington Avenue. Shortly after, an Evansville Police Officer spotted the stolen vehicle on Highway 41.

The stolen Mercedes came to a stop at a red light at the intersection of Walnut and 41, while the officer was stationed at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue. When both lights turned green, the officer made a U-turn to head north on Highway 41.

Allegedly, the driver of the stolen vehicle accelerated at a high speed and cut off another driver to take the exit onto the E. Lloyd Expressway. The EPD officers pursued the Mercedes, reaching speeds of up to 80 mph on the expressway.

Ultimately, the officers decided to call off a felony traffic stop when the driver stopped at a red light on S. Green River Road. The driver, identified as Justin S. Steele, was instructed to turn off the car, step out, and walk backwards towards the officer.

Steele was taken into custody and questioned by the officers on the scene. He claimed that a man had given him the keys to the vehicle the previous day and allowed him to drive it until the morning. However, the vehicle’s owner’s girlfriend confirmed to the police that she had never given Steele permission to drive the car.

She stated that Steele had never driven the Mercedes before and she was unsure how he had obtained the only key to the vehicle. The victim’s boyfriend, who was also present, asserted that he had not given Steele permission to drive the car either.

Justin Steele, 38, of Evansville, was subsequently arrested and booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail on a charge of Auto Theft.
