Accident – Death – Obituary News : Ely, MN (KROC-AM News)- Authorities in Ely, Minnesota have made a grim discovery in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. The body of a missing canoeist has been found, according to a news release from the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.
The search and rescue teams had been scouring the area for two men who went missing after a water emergency on May 18. One of the missing individuals has been identified as 41-year-old Jesse Melvin Haugen from Cambridge, Minnesota. Tragically, his body was found near Curtain Falls on Iron Lake, which sits on the Minnesota-Canada border.
Haugen was part of a group of four individuals who encountered a harrowing incident when their canoes went over the falls nearly two weeks ago. Despite the efforts of search teams, Haugen’s companion, 40-year-old Reis Melvin Grams from Lino Lakes, remains missing.
The search operation has been hindered by challenging weather and water conditions, with more rain forecasted in the area over the weekend. Due to the unavailability of flights in and out of the region until Monday, the search for Grams will continue into the next week.
A team of 8-12 individuals is involved in the search effort, utilizing Zodiac boats, canoes, ROVs, drones, and K-9 units to comb through the wilderness. The three other members of the canoeing group were successfully located and airlifted from the area. One of the survivors sustained serious injuries but is in stable condition.
As authorities press on with the search for Grams, they are appealing to the public for any information that could aid in the investigation. The community is urged to contact local law enforcement with any relevant details.
