A tragic accident in Scioto County, Ohio, has claimed the lives of four individuals, including three young children. The incident occurred on State Route 104 in Morgan Township on May 24, involving two vehicles and resulting in devastating consequences.

Details of the Crash

The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to a call regarding a two-vehicle crash on State Route 104. Gage Smith, 22, from Piketon, was driving northbound on SR 104 when the accident occurred. Smith reportedly lost control of his vehicle after passing another northbound vehicle, crossing over the center line and colliding with an oncoming southbound vehicle.

Tragically, three children in Smith’s vehicle lost their lives in the crash. The young victims were identified as 4-year-old Navy Copas, 6-year-old Madison Copas, and 5-year-old Xavier Smith.

Fatalities and Injuries

In addition to the children, a woman identified as 28-year-old Courtney Copas, also from Piketon, was seriously injured in the collision. She was rushed to Grant Medical Center for treatment. Sadly, on May 31, authorities confirmed that Courtney Copas had passed away from her injuries.

Gage Smith, the driver responsible for the crash, was also injured and received medical treatment before being taken into custody at the Scioto County Jail. The Ohio State Highway Patrol revealed that Smith is suspected to have been under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident, with impairment believed to have played a significant role in the tragedy.

Legal Ramifications

Smith is currently facing charges of three counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and one count of aggravated vehicular assault in connection with the crash. The authorities have not yet announced whether these charges will be amended following Courtney Copas’ death.
