The number of casualties in the landslides in Mizoram has climbed to 29, with the discovery of the body of a 34-year-old woman in the Tlawng River in Kolasib district. The woman, identified as Vanlalruali, and her husband went missing after being struck by a landslide in Aibawk village in Aizawl district on Tuesday.

The tragic discovery of Vanlalruali’s body was made in the river in Hortoki village in Kolasib district, which shares a border with Assam, on Friday. Her body was retrieved from the river and transported to Kawnpui, where her family positively identified her.

The search is ongoing for five other missing individuals, including four from Melthum and a six-month-old baby, as well as Vanlalruali’s husband. These individuals were all affected by the landslides in Aizawl district earlier in the week.

Among the deceased, 21 were local residents, while the remaining eight were migrants from Jharkhand and Assam. In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister Lalduhoma has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh for each of the deceased’s next of kin.

The government of Mizoram has allocated Rs 15 crore to address the aftermath of the disasters caused by the heavy rainfall brought on by Cyclone Remal. The state is working tirelessly to provide relief and support to those affected by the landslides and ensure the safety and well-being of its residents.
