Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Jacqueline Adero had two aspirations when she completed her Senior Four exams in 2015: to finish high school and to pursue cadet training in the army. Unfortunately, her dreams were shattered due to circumstances beyond her control.

Speaking to us in May 2023, Adero, a resident of Arukolong, Zambia Parish, Kamdini Sub-county, revealed how taking on house cleaning duties derailed her ambitions. Her life took a drastic turn in November 2017 when she shared her story of a Chinese national, known only as Yhang, fathering her child.

Yhang, an employee of Sinohydro Construction Company Ltd working on the Karuma Dam project, promised Adero marriage and a future in China. However, her hopes were shattered when he returned to China without her, leaving her pregnant and alone.

The Betrayal and Abuse

As Adero carried the pregnancy with shame and pain, she recalled how Yhang would corner her and coerce her into having sex after initially asking her to clean his living quarters.

Despite the abuse, Adero felt trapped in her role as a cleaner at the construction camp, as it was her family’s only source of income. When she discovered she was pregnant, Yhang’s promises of marriage and a life in China quickly faded away.

The Struggle Continues

In July last year, Adero passed away after battling a respiratory illness that left her incapacitated for a month. Her mother, Sophia Kolo, expressed frustration at the lack of support from government agencies and cultural foundations.

Several other women shared similar stories of exploitation and betrayal by Chinese nationals working on the Karuma Dam project. One woman from Awoo Village recounted how she was lured into working for the Chinese workers, only to face sexual abuse and exploitation.

The Call for Justice

Ms. Pamela Angwech from GWED-G highlighted the urgent need for legal support for the victims of exploitation. She emphasized the prevalence of such cases involving foreign nationals and the lack of accountability.

Despite the challenges faced by these women and their children, the government and company officials have been slow to address the situation. Calls for justice and support for the victims have largely gone unanswered.

The Unresolved Crisis

The plight of the children born to these women remains a pressing issue for the community. The lack of acknowledgment and support for these children adds to the ongoing crisis caused by the exploitation of vulnerable women.

Conclusion

The story of Jacqueline Adero and other women impacted by the actions of Chinese nationals at Karuma Dam sheds light on a disturbing reality. It is crucial for authorities to take action and provide support to the victims of exploitation and abuse.
