JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – In a recent development, Jackson police have successfully apprehended one of the suspects involved in a harrowing carjacking incident that shook a local family to its core. The arrest comes after a surveillance video captured the intense moments of the crime.

According to Detective Tommie Brown, the 14-year-old suspect, identified as Jamontae Latrell Kelly, was brought to the Copiah County Sheriff’s Office by his parents on Wednesday, May 29. The concerned parents took action after seeing media coverage of the incident and handed over their son to law enforcement officers. Subsequently, Kelly was transported to the Jackson Police Department (JPD) around 11:00 p.m.

Charged with armed carjacking and six counts of aggravated assault, Kelly appeared before the authorities for a bond hearing on Thursday. His bond was set at a substantial $1.75 million, reflecting the severity of the charges brought against him.

The alarming carjacking took place on the evening of Friday, May 24, in the 3700 block of Jayne Avenue. Heather Allen, one of the victims of the incident, recounted the terrifying experience to WJTV 12 news. She shared how two suspects approached their vehicle, brandishing a firearm and demanding the keys.

Despite the traumatic ordeal, Allen expressed gratitude that her children and grandchildren escaped physical harm during the attack. However, the emotional toll has prompted her to consider relocating to ensure the safety of her family.

The stolen vehicle was recovered by law enforcement approximately 40 minutes after the carjacking, providing a small sense of relief to the shaken family. In a show of support, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist the family in their recovery from the incident.

As the investigation continues, Jackson police are actively seeking the second suspect involved in the carjacking.
