One woman tragically lost her life and three others were injured in a devastating collision on the Gold Star Bridge along Interstate 95 South in Groton on Friday evening.
The incident occurred around 6:42 p.m. when a Ford Edge travelling southbound on I-95 experienced a mechanical failure just south of the Exit 83 on-ramp on the Gold Star Bridge, according to the Connecticut State Police.
As the Ford came to a halt within the southbound travel lanes, a Freightliner cash-in-transit vehicle owned by Brink’s collided with the rear end of the SUV, causing severe damage.
The driver of the Ford, a 52-year-old man, and the front seat passenger, a 54-year-old woman, were swiftly transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London for suspected minor injuries, as confirmed by state police. However, the rear passenger, identified as 76-year-old Evelyn Diment, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the same hospital, where she tragically succumbed to her injuries, state police reported. All three individuals were residents of Winamac, Indiana.
Additionally, the Brink’s truck driver, a 37-year-old woman from New London, also sustained minor injuries in the collision and was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for medical treatment, according to state police.
The Connecticut State Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident and are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or may have dashboard camera footage to come forward and provide assistance.
