Tyler Sumner : North Adams Man Convicted of Murder

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. (WWLP) – A man from North Adams has been convicted of the murder of 43-year-old Stephanie Olivieri on August 25, 2019. Tyler Sumner, 30, was found guilty of Murder in the First Degree and Possession of Ammunition without a Firearm Identification Card.

The incident took place when the Pittsfield Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting two masked men walking around 66 South John Street early on a Sunday morning. Gunshots were heard in the vicinity, and officers found Olivieri in her car with a fatal head wound upon arrival at the scene.

Olivieri was rushed to Berkshire Medical Center but was pronounced dead shortly after. The Chief Medical Examiner determined that her death was a result of a homicide from a gunshot wound to the head.

Witnesses testified that Tyler Sumner was targeting a resident in the area and Olivieri was not the intended victim of the shooting. The investigation included gathering evidence from the crime scene, video surveillance from nearby locations, witness statements, and communication records.

Text messages exchanged between Sumner and the owner of a black Chevy Malibu revealed instructions to dispose of the vehicle after the incident. Law enforcement was able to seize the car following the exchange at a dealership.

Verdict and Sentencing

District Attorney Timothy J. Shugrue expressed his satisfaction with the guilty verdict, stating, “Today justice was served in the tragic death of an innocent bystander, Stephanie Olivieri.” He commended the efforts of law enforcement and prosecutors in securing the conviction.

The trial was conducted in Berkshire Superior Court, and sentencing will be scheduled by Judge Francis “Frank” E. Flannery.
