The highly anticipated boxing match between former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson and influencer Jake Paul has been postponed from its original July 20 date, Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions announced on Friday.

The decision to delay the fight came after reports emerged that the 57-year-old Tyson had experienced a medical scare on a plane, later revealed to be an ulcer flare-up. Despite Tyson stating that he felt back to 100% health, his doctor advised him to limit his training for the next few weeks to allow for proper rest and recovery.

In a mutual agreement, Tyson and Paul opted to reschedule the fight, which was set to be streamed on Netflix, to ensure that both fighters are in peak condition. The new date for the bout, which will take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, is expected to be announced by next Friday.

Existing ticket holders will have their tickets honoured for the rescheduled date, with arrangements made for refunds through SeatGeek for those unable to attend.

“I want to thank my fans around the world for their support and understanding during this time. Unfortunately, due to my ulcer flareup, I have been advised by my doctor to lighten my training for a few weeks to rest and recover,” said Mike Tyson. “My body is in better overall shape than it has been since the 1990s and I will be back to my full training schedule soon. Jake Paul, this may have bought you some time, but in the end you will still be knocked out and out of boxing for good. I appreciate everyone’s patience and can’t wait to deliver an unforgettable performance later this year.”

Paul also expressed his support for the decision to postpone the fight, stating, “I fully support postponing the event so Mike Tyson has no excuses come fight night. My fans know I don’t want to face Iron Mike at anything but his best, but let there be no mistake – when he steps into the ring with me, I will be ready to claim my W with a sensational finish. Paul vs Tyson will be one for the ages, and I promise to bring my best for this once-in-a-lifetime matchup.”

When Tyson and Paul eventually face off, it will mark the largest age gap in a professional fight in boxing history, with Paul being 27 years old, 31 years younger than Tyson.

The bout represents a significant milestone in Paul’s boxing career, as he continues to challenge himself against a variety of opponents, including former MMA fighters and older boxers. With a record of 9-1, Paul’s only loss came in a split decision against Tommy Fury.

On the other hand, Tyson, with a record of 50-6, has not competed in a professional boxing match since 2005. Despite this, he remains a formidable opponent, having fought to a draw with Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition bout in 2020.
