Two children have been safely rescued after a harrowing seven-hour ordeal in which they were held hostage by a man in Ashland, Oregon. The incident unfolded on Thursday, with emergency services receiving a call around 6 p.m. reporting that a potentially armed and suicidal man had taken the children captive in an apartment.
The man, identified as 36-year-old Erik Macias, was reported to be holding two children aged four and seven hostage in an apartment on Engle Street in Ashland. Jackson County officers were called in to assist the Ashland Police Department in the operation.
The Crisis Negotiations Team from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office made contact with Macias over the phone and attempted to negotiate with him for a period of three hours. However, when negotiations failed, a SWAT team was deployed. They used a flash-bang device outside the apartment and made K9 announcements before entering.
Macias was ultimately arrested, and the children were safely rescued and returned to their mother at 12:42 a.m. following the conclusion of the operation. Macias is facing several charges, including felony fourth-degree domestic assault, domestic violence menacing, coercion, and driving while suspended. Additionally, he had two outstanding warrants for domestic violence and a DUII.
The successful rescue operation was a joint effort between various law enforcement agencies, and the children are now safe and back with their family.
