CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (NEXSTAR) — The University of Virginia has agreed to a $9 million settlement following a tragic shooting incident that claimed the lives of three football players and left two students injured.

Attorney Kimberly Wald, representing the estate of D’Sean Perry, one of the slain players, disclosed that the university will allocate $2 million to each of the families of the three football players who lost their lives. Additionally, $3 million will be awarded to the two wounded students, Marlee Morgan and football player Mike Hollins.

The fatal shooting, which transpired in 2022, was perpetrated by former UVA student and football player Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. alongside his teammates upon their return to campus via a charter bus.

Following their arrival, Jones Jr. reportedly initiated gunfire in close proximity to a parking garage situated near the heart of the campus, prompting a 12-hour lockdown and instilling fear among the university community.

The three football players tragically killed in the incident were identified as Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler, and D’Sean Perry.

In the aftermath of the shooting, UVA administration sought the expertise of external investigators to evaluate the institution’s safety protocols, response procedures to critical incidents, and any preemptive measures taken in response to potential threats posed by individuals such as Darnell Jones Jr.

University officials verified that Jones Jr. had been under the scrutiny of the threat assessment team at UVA prior to the shooting incident.

Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. faces charges of aggravated murder and is slated to appear in court for trial proceedings scheduled for January.
