UTICA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — A Utica resident is facing multiple weapons charges after a dramatic incident involving a discarded handgun inside the New York State Psychiatric Center on Wednesday, May 29.
At 8 am on Wednesday morning, officers from the Crime Prevention Unit attempted to engage with a 20-year-old individual identified as Jeremiah Wright in the 1000 block of Brayton Park Place. Wright, upon noticing the officers, fled on foot, leading to a chase.
During the pursuit, Wright took out a handgun concealed in his sweatshirt pocket and started running while holding the weapon. He then threw the handgun over a fence in a rear yard, only to retrieve it and continue evading the police.
The chase took a dramatic turn as the officers followed Wright onto the grounds of the New York State Psychiatric Center. It was there that they observed him disposing of the handgun in an open stairwell of a basement within the facility. Despite his efforts to escape, Wright was soon apprehended by the authorities.
Upon searching the stairwell, officers recovered a nine-millimeter handgun, leading to the subsequent processing of Wright at the Utica Police Department.
