In a shocking incident that rattled the community of Florida City, a 43-year-old man has been sentenced to 16 years in federal prison for shooting at a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier. Charlie Holley, a resident of Florida City, was found guilty by a federal jury on charges of forcibly assaulting a federal employee, brandishing and discharging a firearm, and possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon. The incident took place on June 21, 2021, in the area of Northwest 6th Street and 7th Avenue.
According to a criminal complaint filed by a U.S. postal inspector, the female postal worker was delivering a parcel addressed to “Whitey White” when she encountered Holley. She reported seeing Holley looking out of a second-floor window and yelling at her. Despite recognizing him from previous deliveries, she was taken aback when he pointed a rifle at her and demanded that she open the package.
Refusing to comply with Holley’s demands, the postal worker quickly left the scene in her vehicle. Moments later, she heard a gunshot and discovered a bullet hole in the back of her postal truck. Fortunately, she escaped unharmed from the terrifying ordeal. Holley then barricaded himself in his home, leading to a tense standoff with law enforcement before surrendering peacefully.
Upon searching Holley’s residence, investigators found a long rifle and a shirt with the name “Whitey” printed on it. Witnesses also reported seeing Holley pointing a rifle at his neighbors prior to the incident involving the mail carrier. The severity of the crimes committed by Holley led to his conviction and subsequent sentencing to 16 years in federal prison.
