ACTON — Authorities are currently investigating a devastating murder-suicide incident that took place on Thursday in a vehicle outside a condominium on Great Road in Acton, Middlesex County.
According to a joint press release from Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Acton Police Chief James Cogan, law enforcement officials received a distressing call around 4 p.m. on Thursday regarding the reported abduction of a 16-year-old girl by her stepfather, identified as Juliano Santana, aged 49.
Three years prior to this tragic event, the young girl had bravely accused Santana of sexually assaulting her on multiple occasions. A trial for these charges was set to commence on July 29.
Upon receiving the call, authorities swiftly contacted Santana’s probation officer, who was able to pinpoint his location through a GPS monitoring device that had been fitted on him due to the pending sexual assault case.
Ryan and Cogan revealed that Acton police promptly responded to a parking lot on Great Road, just outside the girl’s residence. Tragically, they discovered Santana and the girl both deceased from apparent gunshot wounds inside Santana’s vehicle.
Further investigations indicate that Santana abducted the girl as she walked along Great Road near her home after school, before tragically shooting her and then taking his own life.
In the press release, authorities disclosed that nearly three years ago, on September 7, 2021, Santana was arraigned on six counts of aggravated rape of a child. During his court hearing at Malden District Court, bail was set at $30,000 with strict conditions, including wearing a GPS monitoring device, maintaining distance from the victim, and refraining from unsupervised contact with individuals under 18.
Additionally, the girl had an active restraining order against Santana, as confirmed by Ryan and Cogan.
The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the District Attorney’s Office, and the Acton Police Department are actively working together to investigate this heartbreaking incident.
