The tragic incident that unfolded late at night in Sydney’s southwest has left a community in mourning. The young woman who lost her life in the car crash has been identified as 18-year-old Selina Bennetts Ly. As the community comes to terms with this devastating loss, the four passengers who were involved in the accident are currently receiving treatment for their serious injuries in hospital.
The fatal crash occurred shortly after 11pm on Thursday when Selina Bennetts Ly was driving her four friends home. Tragically, her car veered off the road and collided with a tree on The Horsley Drive at Wetherill Park.
Despite the swift response of emergency services, Ms Bennetts Ly was pronounced dead at the scene. Her friends, including two boys aged 16 and 17, and two girls aged 17 and 19, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were rushed to Liverpool and Westmead hospitals for treatment.
The Saturday Telegraph identified the young driver and spoke with her father, Sok, who expressed his devastation at the loss of his daughter. He shared, “I can say I’m really proud of her. I just wish I had the chance to.”
Fairfield Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. They are exploring whether speed played a role in the tragic incident and have established a crime scene at the crash site.
Debris from the vehicle, which was found almost 90 metres from the wreck the following morning, highlights the severity of the impact of the collision.
In New South Wales, stringent regulations govern young drivers on provisional licences. Drivers on a P1 licence who are under 25 are prohibited from having more than one passenger under 21 between 11pm and 5am.
